Questions

Getting started

What is Woodshed?

An AI practice guide. You tell it what you play and what you're working on, and it builds a guided week of practice you do on your phone. A short check-in at the end of the week tells it what happened, and it adjusts the next one.

Do I need a teacher?

No. Woodshed works on your own. If you do have a teacher, the same loop can start from their lesson note. Teacher accounts aren't open to the public yet; you can leave your details on the For Teachers page.

Which instruments does it work for?

Guitar, bass, ukulele, keys and piano, strings (violin, viola, cello), voice, and drums have lessons built around how that instrument is actually played, with the right diagrams. Other instruments work too, with standard notation, but without instrument-specific diagrams. No instrument at all is fine: choose "No instrument" at sign-up and Woodshed builds your week from theory and ear training.

How old do I have to be?

Signing up on your own is for ages 13 and up. If you're a parent or teacher looking to set Woodshed up for a younger student, email us and we'll tell you where that stands.

Is there an Android app?

Woodshed launches on iPhone first, with Android about a week behind. You can join the Android waitlist on the Students page and we'll email you the moment it's live.

Questions

How practice works

Is the practice plan written by AI?

Yes. Woodshed asks your permission before it sends anything to the AI, and shows you exactly what it sends. The facts about music it uses are checked against a reference list we keep and correct. The AI is usually good and sometimes wrong, so use your judgment, especially about anything physical. If an exercise hurts, stop.

Does it replace a teacher?

No. It doesn't know what your hands are doing. It's built to carry a teacher's intent through the week between lessons, or to give you structure when you don't have one.

The plan feels too hard, or too easy. What do I do?

Use the weekly check-in to say how the week went. Woodshed rebuilds the next week from your answer, so this is how you steer it.

Can I use the tuner, metronome, or ear training on their own?

Yes. The Practice section has a real-time tuner, a metronome and timer, ear training, and theory drills you can use any time.

Questions

Your account

I forgot my password.

Use the reset link on the login page. If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, wait a few minutes, then email us from the address on your account.

How do I download or delete my data?

Both are in the app. Settings, then Download my data gives you everything Woodshed holds for your account in one file. Settings, then Delete account removes your login and your data straight away, and it can't be undone. If you can't sign in, email us from the address on the account and we'll delete it for you. If you're a parent or guardian asking on behalf of a student, say so in the email.

How fast do you reply to email?

Within 2 business days, and billing problems go first. We're a two-person team and a person reads every message.

Questions

Privacy and recordings

Does Woodshed record me while I play?

No. During drills, the sound is analyzed on your device to work out pitch and timing, and only the result is kept, like "that note was 12 cents sharp". No audio is recorded, uploaded, or stored. You can refuse microphone access and still use the app; you only lose the exercises that need to hear you.

Do you sell my data or use it to train AI?

No to both, and there are no ads. Woodshed uses Anthropic's Claude model to write plans and lessons. What we send is not used to train their models, and it never includes your email address, password, or any audio. The full list of services that handle data is on the Privacy page.

What is lesson listening?

A teacher can turn on listening during a lesson so Woodshed can turn it into lesson notes. Audio is streamed live to a speech-to-text service and is never recorded or stored, and the words aren't saved either. It requires recorded consent first, from a parent or guardian if the student is under 18, and a "Listening" indicator stays on screen the whole time. Teachers can withdraw consent and delete the summaries whenever they like.

Questions

For teachers

Can I use Woodshed with my students?

Teacher accounts aren't open to the public yet. Leave your details on the For Teachers page and we'll reach out when they are. If you're a school, studio, or franchise, the Schools and Studios page is the place to start.

What happens to my students if I delete my account?

Deleting a teacher account also deletes the student records, lesson logs, and practice plans on your roster. Tell your students first.

Questions

Plans and billing

What does each plan include?

Free has the tuner, metronome and timer, ear training, and theory drills. Practice ($7.99 a month or $59.99 a year) adds dictation and sight-reading. Woodshed Suite ($22.99 a month or $179.99 a year) is everything, including the AI-guided practice week, lesson chat, song lessons, and rehearsal notes. The Pricing page always has the current prices.

How does the free trial work?

Woodshed Suite has a 7-day free trial, once per person. We take your card at the start and nothing is charged until day 8. Cancel before then and you pay nothing. Practice has no trial.

How do I cancel?

In the app, go to Settings, then Plan and billing, and open the billing portal. Your plan stays on until the end of the period you've already paid for, then stops. Deleting your account cancels your plan first.

Can I get a refund?

Payments aren't refunded automatically for partly used periods, but we do review requests. Email us from your account address. If the charge was in the last 7 days on a monthly plan, or the last 14 days on a yearly plan, and you've barely used it, we'll normally refund it. We look at how much of your AI allowance you've used, so heavy use won't qualify. Accidental renewals and billing errors are always worth writing about. Where the law gives you more rights than this, those apply.

Is there a limit on the AI inside Suite?

Yes, so it stays sustainable. You get up to 2 new practice weeks every 7 days, plus weekly allowances for in-depth lessons, chat messages, and song lessons that cover a normal week of practice. A lesson that's already been built never counts against you. If you run out mid-week, you'll see a standard lesson with a note that it isn't personalized, and your allowance refills over the following days.

I signed up before plans launched. What happens to my account?

Accounts created before plans launched get Woodshed Suite at no charge through October 31, 2026. After that you choose a plan, or stay on Free.

Who handles payment?

Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach Woodshed. Sales tax is added where it applies. In the iPhone app, Upgrade opens Safari to check out. If you're under 18, you may need a parent's card.

Your data

Delete your account and data

In the app, go to Settings, then Delete account. It removes your login and your data straight away, and it can't be undone. You can also download a copy first from Settings, then Download my data.

If you can't sign in, email support@thewoodshedlab.com from the address on your account and ask us to delete it. We'll confirm back to you once your account and the data tied to it (lesson notes, practice plans, and practice history) has been removed.

If you're a parent or guardian requesting deletion on behalf of a student, let us know that in the same email.
